Information and Communication Technology in English Teaching

Like many language teachers, you may feel a certain aversion to information and communication technology. "What do I need computers for?" you might ask. After all, you've been teaching English very effectively for years with nothing more technical than a tape recorder. You can teach English perfectly well without computers too, surely? Well, yes, of course you can. But by the same token you can teach English perfectly well without a coursebook, a tape recorder or even a whiteboard. However, these tools do make life easier and can add a valuable extra dimension to your teaching. Ultimately, computers and the internet are just extra tools in your arsenal - tools which can open up whole new vistas within your teaching practice.

The questions:
Assuming that all of you have been teaching English by using the computer, what is your view in teaching English using the computer and the internet? What advantages can we get from it? What are the difficulties and problems you have encountered?

we can explore new activities through the internet. The students enjoy the online activities provided in the internet. Hovewer, when we(more than 5 people) browse the same website, sometimes it's so difficult to open the site and it makes the students frustrated

Basically students enjoy learning by using any forms of gadget-latest technology including computer. I find students are more engaged with the lesson if they are given activities
by using computer. But one of the adventages of learning by using computer first time consuming and second it's not always reliable.

In my opinion, YES why? because it can give us various activities and more lively. It gives us nice pictures so that not only the students, but also me as the teacher are happy to study.

Depending on the various programs used (ie. websites, wida, planet english) the advantages and problems differ. But one of the main advantages I have found is that use of the computer can nearly simulate for students the opportunity to use language in a 'real' setting - such as the conversational practice in the p.e. program. Some internet sites offer furn games, stories and activities. With all of these, one of the main advantages is the interactivity, and the fact that students can progress at their own pace. Disadvantages include techincal and download time difficulties, but primarily that the range of activity offered the student is limited by the range of imagination of the person who initially created the program.

Students enjoy their lesson when it is given in the computer room or when they have to learn english using computers because it is something new for them I think. The advantages that we can get are their english will improve a little bit, etc. The difficulties that often occurs are when there is problem with the server, or the downloading time takes very long time.

I think it's interesting teaching English trough computer or internet in a wider sense. Almost every one loves technology, especially the young generation.

The information they get from the internet is so immense. They can learn from this to develop their knowledge and skills.

It is not easy for sure but with training and prepartion, the problems can be reduced. For state schools their biggest problem is often they do not have the facilities.

Computers and the internet can be so frustrating and annoying yet they can be so facilitating in our teaching.

For honest, I don't really feel comfortable teaching English using computers as a matter of fact that I am not that computer-literate person or perhaps I am not into it as it is too complicated to me. It is not a thing for me. Yet, if I have to answer the question, the simple thing I can figure out that teacher does not have to waste a lot of energy in terms of speaking as students can do by themselves all the activities, teacher only needs to monitor them. Perfect. The other thing comes up with the idea of browsing through internet which enables students download as much information as they want, not to mention how many websites useful for teaching learning. That is what I can think about at the moment. Thank you.

I think teaching using computers and the Internet media will be helpful both to teachers and students especially in English subjects. In addition, using these media will optimize the potential of students, not only in grammatical, but a manner of speaking and listening exercises English language conversations.
Learning English using computers and the Internet makes it easier to find information. Not transfixed by one source only the teacher but we can know it from various sources.
If we are not skilled in using technology then we will be very difficult to find infiomasi needed. Therefore, knowledge of technology becomes a very important thing to support our success in understanding something, especially in teaching English.
